From his earliest years, Panni found joy in exploring the garden. The wildlife initially grabbing his interest, with the love of plants creeping up on him when tackling the garden in his first home. Rearranging plants, observing, uprooting and replanting them to match colours and foliage, the bug was truly had.
Looking back, designing his own garden was a natural progression which was followed by creating spaces for friends and family. It wasn't just about making things look good, as he says: "It's about crafting environments which evoke a specific feeling. Landscape design has the power to transport you almost anywhere on earth, just by stepping out into your garden."
Studying landscape design as a career was something which he had put off but eventually had to pursue.
"Landscape design is more than just planning where the barbecue goes or carving out a play area for the kids. It’s about creating an atmosphere. The garden has the power to not only transport us— but to bring back memories, to spark an emotion, to make us feel truly at home. When we pay the same attention to the garden as we do to the house, what we get out of it is beyond measure."
We all have our preferences. Some, like Panni, are drawn to the soft pastels and rustic charm of a timeless cottage garden, where wildflowers spill over pathways and the scent of lavender and honeysuckle lingers in the air. Others find comfort in the sleek minimalism of a modern, low-maintenance retreat—clean lines, structured planting, the feel of a luxury resort in their own back garden. For some, a tropical garden brings nostalgia, a reminder of "back home" with its lush greenery and bursts of colour. Others seek the serenity of a Japanese-inspired haven, a place to escape the relentless pace of daily life.
"Whatever the vision, a well-designed garden isn’t just the aesthetics. It’s about how a space makes you feel—the atmosphere it creates, and the connection it fosters between people and nature. That's what I feel landscape design is truly about. Because when we can imagine more, we don't constrain what is achievable. I mean come on, we work hard, we all deserve a great garden!"
